Flowers of the Shade

Flowers of the Shade by Somaya Soliman presents an abundant floral arrangement through large, outward-spreading forms. Red, pink, yellow, and violet strokes gather into prominent flower heads, with smaller buds and sweeping leaves extending below. Deep shadow occupies one side, while turquoise and pale warm passages open the other.
The flowers are described through energetic, directional marks. Each head radiates from a darker center, giving the petals a clear outward movement. Bright touches of white and yellow provide highlights within the richer color, making the forms appear to catch light against their shaded setting.
Longer strokes connect the upper blooms with the lower leaves and buds. These changes in scale give the arrangement a varied rhythm, while the blue and turquoise background passages create breathing room between the denser forms. The surface remains visibly worked throughout the composition.
The title draws attention to the relationship between brightness and darkness. The flowers gain their force from the shaded areas around them, with color emerging in concentrated bursts. Flowers of the Shade gives the botanical subject a dramatic, expressive character built from the energy of its marks.
